Burger Friday: A classic cheeseburger, at the new Original on 42nd

There are nine sandwiches on the menu at the new-ish Original on 42nd, the aptly named sandwich shop that has squeezed itself into the tiny former original home of the Colossal Cafe. To chefs/co-owners Andy Lilja and Stephanie Kochlin, including a burger on that roster was a no-brainer.

Get ready for the Original on 42nd, a sandwich shop run in partnership with chefs Andrew Lilja and Stephanie Kochlin. The operation will feature made-to-order, seasonally focused sandwiches (made with breads baked daily at the Colossal), supplemented by a small array of soups and salads.

The Original on 42nd will replace Colossal Cafe with a mom and pop sandwich shop.

“Why can’t I get a good roast beef sandwich?” Lilja inquires of me. It’s a question worth asking. He’s got the answer, in sandwich form, arriving around the end of this month.

The original Colossal Cafe spot now sports sandwiches.

A sandwich might have saved my life last night. As I was leaving the office after 7 p.m., grouchy from low blood sugar and soul-sucking press deadlines, a friend sent me a text asking if I knew that The Original on 42nd was open. My gut took over, and though I live west, I headed south.

Two notable chefs will take over operations in the tiny location.

Stephanie Kochlin is best known for opening Pig and Fiddle in Edina. Now, the duo will be creating fresh sandwiches in the tiny South Minneapolis spot. Both will be creating made-to-order sandwiches plus a few soups and sandwiches.
